Crochet Pattern Sleep Sack - A Good Idea for Summers |
Pediatricians tire themselves giving instructions to new moms specifically mentioning that babies should be put to sleep on their backs and the crib should be free of toys, blankets and other objects that can potentially cause breathing hazards. This is mainly because the baby can potentially harm themselves while asleep. A sleepsack can prove to be perfect for keeping babies warm and eliminating the risks involved with re-breathing and suffocation.
Sleepsacks are available in a variety of styles, patterns and designs. Normally sleepsacks are made with the explicit understanding that the basic need is to keep the baby warm (Safety of course comes as a bonus!). Usually the fabric used to make sleepsacks is flannel, heavy cotton, wool or blanket cloth, making them a bit unsuitable for the summer months. If you try your hand at surfing the internet, you may find a couple of more options.
A crochet pattern sleepsack is one such option that provides a comfortable sleep for your child during the summer months. A crochet sleepsack has some additional benefits:
- It allows the free flow of air.
- A densely patterned sleepsack will suffice for the summer as well as mild climate conditions.
- If made from wool knit yarn, it can provide sufficient warmth in cool weather, too.
- It is easily washable.
- It is lightweight.
Sleepsacks should be long and roomy but the chest should be fitted. The neck opening should be of optimum size – large enough so that dressing is easy, but not so large to allow the sleepsack to come off while asleep. A neck hole of a sleepsack should also not come over the shoulders since it can restrict the movement of the upper arm.
For easy diaper changes, it is best if the zipper opens from bottom to top so that you do not have to undress the baby every time. Sleepsacks with Velcro tabs are stiff and can poke into arms and legs and should be avoided if possible. Also the sound of ripping Velcro open may disturb the baby’s sleep.
For additional baby safety, make sure that the sleepsack is made of cotton or wool only. These are natural fibers and will go a long way to ensure that the environment around your baby is not polluted with harmful emissions from synthetic or chemically treated fabrics or yarns.
