Flannel Sheets for Crib Mattress

When it comes to the matter of crib safety, it has been seen that parents mostly focus on the crib and mattress measurements to ensure that no gaps are left for the baby to get stuck in. They also ensure that nothing is left loose in the crib and opt for wearable blankets or sleep sacks for their babies.

But there is more to baby safety than just mattress measurements, wearable blankets and sleepsacks. Such options can prevent accidents from happening, but the choice of fabric used for baby layette presents another challenge.

Yet another aspect that has now been the focus of institutions that are concerned with baby safety is the manner in which crib sheets are fitted. It is now coming to light that loosely fitted crib sheets present another hazard. If the crib sheet is not fitted properly over the mattress, it tends to slip off and pose as great a hazard as loose blankets and soft pillows. Many manufacturers have responded to this and developed stayput fitted crib sheets that will not unravel with a baby’s arm and leg movements. These stayput crib sheets do not come away even when the baby is strong enough to tug at the sheets.

While buying stayput crib sheets, the fitting is not the only factor that needs to be considered. The fabric also plays an important role. Flannel crib sheets made of cotton, preferably untreated cotton, are best suited for babies. This is because any type of treatment involves chemicals that can contaminate the natural cotton fiber. Organic cotton is grown without using synthetic pesticides or other chemicals that are otherwise used to increase the yield of the crop. During the manufacturing process, it is ensured that all the treatment that the fabric requires is done with natural products so that the baby is not exposed to any type of harmful emissions.

Synthetic textiles cost less and therefore many parents are attracted by the low cost and tempted into buying. Moreover, they are touted as ‘wrinkle free’ and ‘easily washable’ to lure buyers. But such products carry a hidden danger. The same substance that goes in to making polyester textiles is also used to make PET bottles. The awareness campaign launched by the Green Movement should be proof enough of how dangerous plastics can be. Try to shift to organic products as much as you can, especially for those that you need for your baby.
