Protect Your Baby with an Organic Infant Sleep Sack

From removing junk food ads from schools to stopping the practice of spraying toxic pesticides on school property; from awareness about chemicals used to make flameproof mattresses to how these chemicals are absorbed by us, the organic movement is fast changing the way we look at things around us.

The fire resistant standards set by the government are strict. In order to pass those tests, manufacturers treat products including bedding with various kinds of chemicals. These chemicals are harmful, and there is no law that requires manufacturers to specify the chemicals that have been used on the labels of the products.

Baby safety is one of the major concerns that parents have and the increasing incidence of unexplained infant deaths is equally disturbing. You probably think that you can manage the hazard that loose covers like blankets and sheets pose to infants by opting for a sleepsack. However this is far from the truth. A sleepsack can only protect the baby from pulling over a loose blanket over his head. A sleepsack, if not chosen well, may pose a threat to your babies’ health if it is not free from poisonous chemicals.

Newborns are the most vulnerable to chemicals that are used for treating fabrics. These fabrics ultimately go into making sheets, mattress covers, blankets, sleepsacks and other bedding accessories that you buy for the baby. Infants remain in the crib for most of the time during the first six months and come in close contact with these chemicals, which are ultimately absorbed by their bodies.

Wool and cotton are natural fibers. They are naturally fire resistant in as much as they do not go up in flames immediately. What increases the flammability is the treatment that they are given to make them feel smoother than they actually are.

Organically produced cotton and wool and untreated fabrics made from them have natural breathing properties that allow the free flow of air. If you are looking for a sleepsack or for that matter any other item for the baby’s layette, you will do well for your baby and yourself if you make sure that you are buying organic.

Initially the organic movement was dismissed by most of the population as a passing fad and a fancy of the rich. Over time, it has become an important part of our lives. It is gathering momentum and affecting the textile and fashion industry in a big way. Reports like the one issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicate that ‘seven of the 15 top pesticides used on US cotton crops are potential or known human carcinogens’.  Such reports have been instrumental in giving a boost to the organic momentum. The need of the hour is awareness and the World Wide Web is a convenient place to look for information relating to organic products and food.
