What does Propartum Drops contain?

Propartum Drops contain the following 100% herbal ingredients:

Squaw Vine (Mitchella repens) is an herbal remedy known to be very effective in preparing the body for a safe labor and birth. Native Americans have used this plant to facilitate childbirth for many centuries. This herb improves contractions for an easier and shorter labor, decreases pain and calms nervousness.

Raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus) are known to be an excellent herbal supplement for pregnant women, especially those who are nearing the very end of their pregnancy. This herb improves the tone of the uterine ligaments, optimizes the health of mother and growing baby, prevents premature birth and facilitates labor and delivery. Raspberry leaves will also help to prevent swelling and bleeding after the birth.

Passiflora incarnata also called Passion Flower - is used as a natural sedative and can relieve anxiety and nervousness as well as pain experienced during labor. Passiflora will help reduce fear about the impending birth and is also valuable for its balancing effects on blood pressure.

Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and an excellent tonic for the uterus and for stimulation of contractions. It can increase endurance and vitality necessary for the labor process and is very useful for combating stress. In traditional use, licorice root tea has been used successfully for reducing fever during childbirth and aiding the easy delivery of the newborn as well as the placenta.

How do I know when I am really in labor?

There are a number of signs to indicate that you are in labor. Although you should be aware of these signs, remember that many women experience things differently and what may apply to you may not apply to others. This is perfectly normal. Also remember that 'false alarms' are common and many women mistake the normal activity of late pregnancy as an indication that they are going into labor. This is a time when your body is 'getting into gear' and there may be one or two 'practice runs' before the real thing! If you arrive at the hospital or birthing center certain that you are in labor only to be sent home- don't be embarrassed- it happens all the time!

What are some signs of labor?

Regular contractions that become more frequent, closer together and increase in intensity. While the normal contractions of late pregnancy (called 'Braxton Hicks' contractions) may often be mistaken for the onset of labor, you can be relatively certain that labor has begun if your contractions have been going for about an hour, are evenly spaced about 5 minutes apart and last for about a minute each.

A gush or constant trickle of fluid from the vagina indicating that your waters have 'broken'.

Passing of the mucus 'plug' that keeps the uterus closed during pregnancy. This is sometimes called a 'show'.

A bloody or brownish mucus discharge accompanying the above symptoms.

Don't hesitate to call your midwife, doctor or birth assistant if you are not sure. They will be able to reassure you and want to know of any changes that occur -even if you are not yet in true labor.

How painful is childbirth really?

Many first time mothers ask this question and characteristically receive lots of vague reassurance from friends and family - along with a host of 'horror stories' about their own birthing experiences! The truth is that most labor comes with some degree of pain but it varies from woman to woman and can range from mild to severe. Many women also report that, while they experience pain, it is different in quality from other types of pain - especially as there is such a great reward at the end of it. Perception and tolerance levels of pain also play a large part in how you experience your labor – there are many things that can be done to reduce pain and assist with a more comfortable delivery.

How do I know that these herbs are safe during pregnancy?

Propartum Drops contain herbs that have been safely used for centuries in traditional folk medicine to prepare women for childbirth. Because of their tonic effect on the uterus, they should not be used during the earlier stages of pregnancy, but only in the last two to three weeks to strengthen contractions and prepare the uterus for birth. Despite the safety of the herbs during this time, it should be remembered that herbs are medicines and should therefore be used in pregnancy only under supervision of your doctor, midwife, doula or other health professional.

What else can I do?

Prepare yourself mentally, physically and spiritually for the birth by reading books on childbirth, joining a support group for pregnant women, speaking to other mothers or even your own mother or mother-in-law.

Take good care of yourself in the form of a balanced diet, getting enough rest, relieving stress, meditating and talking with your partner about the future. This will be invaluable in preparing yourself for labor, birth and parenthood.

Organize a birth plan including the place you would like to deliver (e.g. home, birthing center or hospital), who should be present and your preferences of medical interventions in different circumstances.

A supportive environment at the birth has been shown to be one of the most important factors in the speed of delivery and how much pain the mother feels. Think carefully about who you would like to have present at the birth for support and consider a trained doula or birthing assistant.
