Pregnancy Information: The First Trimester with Free Advice on Natural Remedies |
Congratulations! The journey of pregnancy has begun! You missed your period and did the test (maybe more than once!) and now you are officially an expectant-mom. Whether this pregnancy is long-awaited or a complete surprise, you have taken your first steps on the road to new parenthood.
What to expect during the first 3 months of
pregnancy
During the first trimester, or the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, your body is undergoing huge changes. Your thoughts and emotions are also affected - not only by the fact that you are entering a new and sometimes scary time of life, but also because of the effects of your changing hormones.
For women who are pregnant for the first time, everything is new and it is difficult to know what to expect. Even for mothers who have walked this road before, each pregnancy may be different and cause different changes or discomforts. Many newly pregnant parents want to know as much as they can about pregnancy and how their baby is growing through each stage. This quest for information is very healthy and will help you to understand what is happening each step of the way. Gather as much information as you can, but remember that you are unique! Sometimes it may seem that everyone wants to give you advice and also to share their stories of pregnancy with you. See this as an expression of love and take what you need from it. This is your pregnancy and your baby!
Physical changes in the first trimester
As your body adjusts to the new life growing within you, you will experience some changes and discomforts. Apart from missing your menstrual period, the earliest changes that occur in the pregnant woman are generally tender or enlarged breasts and increased frequency of urination.
From about the second month of pregnancy you may begin to feel nausea and have headaches, your skin may break out and you might feel unusually tired and moody. These are all extremely common symptoms of the first trimester of pregnancy and, on the whole, should be no cause for alarm. These discomforts are a sign of the changes taking place in your body in order to nourish and support the life of your baby and most of these symptoms will dissipate in the coming months.
Caring for your and your baby’s health
It is important to consult your OBGYN, midwife or other health care practitioner for your first prenatal check-ups during the first trimester. He/she will be able to examine you to check the progress of your pregnancy and your own health, as well as give you advice for this special time in your life.
Following a healthy diet, a regular exercise routine and avoiding harmful substances like nicotine, alcohol and recreational drugs will help to ensure that you and your baby stay in peak health!
Your baby’s development in the first trimester
By the end of the first trimester your baby will have developed almost all of his/her vital tissues and organs, and several of these- including the heart, liver and kidneys- have begun to function. Although you are not able to see what is happening and cannot yet feel movement, your baby is very busy growing and developing everything that he or she needs to sustain life!
Your baby has reached between 2 ½ and 3 inches long and weighs about an ounce. He/she has completely formed limbs, hands, feet, fingers and toes- even nails. The eyes are almost completely developed and the fingerprints are already imprinted on the skin! Your baby is already a unique individual!
Although you will not be able to feel it yet, your baby is also moving around a lot at this time. There is still plenty of room to move due to his/her small size and there will be a whole lot of wriggling, kicking and shifting around that you are unaware of. It is only a matter of time before you will not only feel your baby’s movements but see and hear him/her as well so- much as you are looking forward to it- enjoy the peace and quiet for now!
Enjoy this special time
Relish the changes of your new pregnancy and rejoice in the wonder of your developing child. One of the most miraculous times of your life is well underway. Take time out to relax and think about the wonderful things that are happening to you!
Share your good news!
This should be a time of joy and sharing. Some time after you and your partner have found out the news, you will want to tell your family and friends so that they may share in this special time with you.
